Lake Poinsett
(updated 6-25-2026) Jonathan Wagner, superintendent at Lake Poinsett State Park, said Lake Poinsett’s water level is up! On Monday, they received nearly 8 inches of rain, which caused some flooding, including at boat ramps, the State park’s hiking trails, and docks around the lakes. That being said, this has technically expanded the lake, Wagner says. Several anglers have been witnessed fishing in places that are typically dry land, and they are catching bream and bass that have ventured out into this new territory.
“With that being said, what these fish are hitting on is unclear,” he said. “The fish are able to go after new bugs and critters they weren’t able to before, but worms would probably be a good bet for some fun attempts.”
He says, as a reminder, that the bait shop at Lake Poinsett State Park will have limited live bait in the near future, most likely for several weeks. “Please call the park with questions. Currently we have minnows, nightcrawlers, redworms and waxworms for live bait. Crickets are currently sold out.”
